What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration (formerly Udyog Aadhaar) is the official government registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. Launched by the Ministry of MSME in July 2020, it replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system.

Registration is done on the Udyam Registration Portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) using your Aadhaar and PAN. Once registered, you receive a Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a Udyam Registration Certificate — the gateway to over 50 government schemes and financial benefits.

The registration is free of cost on the government portal. EasyVyapar's service fee of ₹499–₹999 covers expert-assisted filing, document verification, and support.

Who Qualifies as an MSME?

As per the revised MSME classification (effective July 2020):

CategoryInvestment in Plant & MachineryAnnual Turnover
Micro≤ ₹1 crore≤ ₹5 crore
Small≤ ₹10 crore≤ ₹50 crore
Medium≤ ₹50 crore≤ ₹250 crore

Both criteria (investment AND turnover) must be within limits. If either exceeds the threshold, the enterprise moves to the next category. Any business entity — sole proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, or cooperative — can register.

10 Key Benefits of MSME Udyam Registration

Benefit 1

Collateral-Free Loans Under CGTMSE

Registered MSMEs can access loans up to ₹2 crore without any collateral or third-party guarantee under the Credit Guarantee Trust Fund for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme. The government provides the guarantee to the lending bank, removing the biggest barrier for small businesses — the lack of mortgageable assets. Banks including SBI, PNB, Canara Bank, and most PSU banks participate in this scheme.

Benefit 2

Subsidised Interest Rates — Up to 2% Subvention

Under the Interest Subvention Scheme for MSMEs, registered enterprises get a 2% interest subvention on incremental or fresh term loans. For a ₹50 lakh loan at 12% per annum, this translates to ₹1 lakh in savings every year — adding up significantly over a 5-year loan tenure. The scheme is administered through scheduled commercial banks and covers both manufacturing and service MSMEs.

Benefit 3

Priority in Government Tenders (Public Procurement Policy)

The Public Procurement Policy mandates that all Central Government ministries, departments, and CPSEs must procure at least 25% of their annual purchases from MSMEs (with 4% earmarked for SC/ST-owned enterprises). Registered MSMEs get:

  • Waiver on Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) for tenders
  • Exemption from prior turnover and experience requirements in many tenders
  • Bid price matching preference (L1 price offered to MSMEs if they match within 15%)
Benefit 4

Protection Against Delayed Payments — MSME Samadhaan

Under the MSME Development Act, buyers must pay MSMEs within 45 days of delivery (or as per agreement, but maximum 45 days). If payment is delayed, the buyer must pay compound interest at 3× the RBI bank rate (currently ~15–18% p.a.) from the agreed due date. MSMEs can file online complaints on the MSME Samadhaan portal, which routes cases to Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Councils (MSEFCs) for resolution — a legally binding process.

Benefit 5

ISO Certification Reimbursement

The government reimburses 75–80% of the cost of obtaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or other quality certification for registered MSMEs (up to ₹75,000 for manufacturing, ₹50,000 for service enterprises). This makes quality certification affordable for small businesses competing in export markets.

Benefit 6

50% Subsidy on Patent and Trademark Fees

Registered MSMEs get a 50% rebate on government fees for filing patents (under the Patents Act) and 50% on trademark registration fees. For a patent application, the government fee is ₹8,000 for small entities — MSME registration halves this to ₹4,000. This encourages innovation and brand building among small businesses.

Benefit 7

Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS)

MSMEs upgrading their technology can access a 15% capital subsidy on institutional credit up to ₹1 crore (maximum subsidy: ₹15 lakhs) for purchasing new plant and machinery. The scheme covers over 400 eligible product categories across 51 subsectors. Combined with a CGTMSE collateral-free loan, a Micro enterprise can upgrade machinery with minimal upfront cost.

Benefit 8

Electricity Bill Concessions

Most state electricity boards offer concessions of 10–25% on electricity tariffs for registered MSMEs. For manufacturing units with high power consumption, this can translate to lakhs in annual savings. The exact concession varies by state — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat have active industrial electricity subsidy schemes for MSMEs.

Benefit 9

Easier Bank Loan Approvals — Priority Sector Lending

The RBI classifies MSME lending under Priority Sector Lending (PSL), requiring banks to lend 7.5% of their Adjusted Net Bank Credit (ANBC) to micro and small enterprises. This creates an institutional incentive for banks to approve MSME loans faster. Combined with the Udyam certificate as proof of registration, loan processing is significantly faster compared to unregistered businesses.

Benefit 10

Access to NSIC Schemes — Raw Material Assistance & Marketing Support

The National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) runs several schemes exclusively for registered MSMEs:

  • Raw Material Assistance — Helps procure raw materials on credit through consortium arrangements
  • Single Point Registration Scheme — Simplifies government tender participation across all departments
  • Marketing Intelligence Services — Free export market research and buyer-seller matching
  • Performance and Credit Rating — Subsidised credit rating to help access better interest rates
Summary: Udyam Registration unlocks collateral-free loans, 2% interest subvention, government tender priority, delayed payment protection, IP fee subsidies, technology upgrade grants, electricity concessions, priority bank lending, and NSIC schemes — all free to register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam Registration compulsory for all small businesses?

It is not legally compulsory for most businesses, but it is strongly advisable. Without a Udyam Registration Certificate, you cannot access CGTMSE loans, claim delayed payment protection under the MSME Act, or bid in government tenders under MSME preference. Service sector businesses, manufacturers, and traders all qualify.

Can I have GST registration and Udyam registration both?

Yes — and you should. GST registration and Udyam/MSME registration are independent. GST registration is required for tax compliance; Udyam registration unlocks financial benefits. Both are complementary. If you already have GST registration, apply for Udyam registration here.

Does Udyam registration expire?

No. Udyam Registration Certificates are permanent and do not have an expiry date. However, if your business grows and crosses the MSME classification limits (e.g., turnover exceeds ₹250 crore), you must update your registration or de-register.

What if I have an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM)?

All Udyog Aadhaar registrations had to be migrated to Udyam by December 31, 2021. If you have an old UAM, you need a new Udyam Registration. EasyVyapar can handle Udyam Conversion for you.
